This painting was a turning point in my work. I made it during a time of major disruption to my life. I was suffering terribly. I remember finally knowing how to put the pain into the work with this one. It is thick with many iterations that evolved and were wrecked and rebuilt until it resonated with how I really felt. It showed me how to keep pushing the work until it says "Fuck Yes."

It awakened me to the power of painting and how it holds things together after everything has fallen apart. It showed me how to make my world--how to bring the broken parts, the confusion, the hurting heart and make something that makes sense--to me. And to me it resembles a ship of sorts and it is about to sail off the edge of the known.

Many shards of color explode outward around an empty house-like line drawn schematic. Gold pipes plumb down through darkness and glow. A black background contributes to the drama surrounding the hard-edge "rays" made up of transparent washes, muted metallics including antique gold and green gold, as well as many bright colors such as hot pink, coral, orange and blue. Stormy brushwork can be seen behind the tightly controlled shapes. Read more about this piece…

A Distance the Thickness of Gauze

acrylic on canvas
48 x 36 inches
SOLD

An exploration of nuances in color, dynamic angles, sharp geometry, and differing levels of transparency, over a black background.

The title, "A Distance the Thickness of Gauze" is about the (sometimes) barely detectable feeling of the intuition and the so slight, but real heart connections that are mostly indescribable. It's also about when sometimes you get right up next to knowing something, but you don’t want to jinx it by saying it to yourself. Or maybe you can see through now, get a glimpse into the next new you. Maybe it’s so close, a distance the thickness of gauze. Bright hope, a quick lift peek in the mirror.
