Bloodline

acrylic on canvas
72 x 60 inches
NFS

The symbols in this piece including Egyptian-like wing work and odd objects such as the black comb and radiating “X” at the top imbue the work with a sense of ritualistic purpose or ceremony. The white half-circle with radiating off-white rays in the center indicates the presence of spiritual guides or guardians. The red line that waves across the bottom of canvas and beyond calls to mind themes of life force, passion, and the visceral aspects of human experience.

The colors themselves represent the following: deep blues and greens suggest healing and stability; teal evokes renewal; black represents mystery and the unknown we grapple with psychologically. The Earthy palette is grounding and hints at themes around our corporeal existence and ancestral connections. Bright orange, pink, yellow and red add brightness and signify vitality.

I made this painting around the time my husband had open heart surgery for a triple bypass. The symbology of this life event can be seen in the pastel peach triple ripples; the bloodline running clear through the bottom; the spiritual guardian watching over. My daughter, Ajna, also collaborated with me in the making of this piece, her contributions bringing in elements that pushed me out of my typical approaches and ways of seeing the work. Her hand in the painting also added a bloodline of my own to the finished singularity.

A strange composition with a plum line through a multitude of woodtoned strata. Perfect circles bring a sense of order and the black and white stripes, a rhythm.

Reconstruction with Golden Joinery

A bold, abstract geometric composition with stark black and white patterns, bold shapes, and nudes. The strange arrangement is a reconfiguration of parts and pieces from a time before, now held together with gold mendings. The white scallops and voluptuous curve in the lower right corner bring a feminine tone to the overall play.

The Odd Prism

The Odd Prism

Alchemy, a medieval chemical science and speculative philosophy, aimed to transmute base metals into gold, sought the discovery of a universal cure for disease as well as an elixir for immortality.

The central odd prism shape powers the alchemical processes happening in this dynamic, asymmetrical layout. Its strangeness is like our imperfect, multifaceted human self–fragmented and disjointed, ripe with complexities and contradictions that contain forces for massive creativity and transformation.

The refraction of light through an irregular prism might distort and fragment our perception providing an alternative view of the opposing forces within the psyche. We are challenged to embrace paradoxes, contradictions, and the integration of seemingly disparate elements in our own minds. Armed with this new seeing, we might know the right next step or have an ah-ha moment that changes us.

The linework on the left side infuses the system with incoming energy. The chevron pattern that echoes a corner of the prism indicates that it’s radiating. The gold, black and bone colored arches on the right side symbolize pass-through points where the three light bars are turned into gold or the gold is turned into light. The obviously phallic shape, balanced by receptive forms, references the all-powerful and infinite life force.

The Opening

The Opening

Large, stacked shapes resemble an eccentric armoire; a suitcase for visiting another dimension; or a giant shield etched with tribal markings and light beams. Repeating lines make rhythmic sections throughout, and the black and white 3-d rays and steps draw the mind to an ethereal dimension. In the lower left corner and upper right panel are pieces of the planet Jupiter. The palette that includes neon orange, pink, coral, spring green, bright yellow, light aqua, and navy blue is grounded by earth tones, deep muddy reds, and antique bronze. The right side of the “doorway“ to the infinite or deep space is gouged and scratched, evidence of the many explorers who have passed through.

Broken Boat

Broken Boat

acrylic on canvas
48 x 72 inches
SOLD

This work feels like a departure from previous paintings because of the looseness, the way things lay tossed together and a little less carefully stabilized.

Titled “Broken Boat,” it’s about realizing you’ve crossed an ocean and reached the other side and the boat did a really good job of ferrying you,

and now you are here,
in this new place,
and the boat is in peaceful pieces,
no longer of use for you.
You can’t go back to where you came from
and your time is now.

Five Cups

Five Cups

acrylic on canvas
72 x 48 inches
SOLD

The title references the Five of Cups in the Tarot--a traditionally weighty card, signifying loss and painful challenges, and which features three of the five cups overturned. However, in this scene all five cups are upright. It’s an intentional countering of circumstances, a setting things in order with determination and an awakening to the gains of loss. Additionally, the five cups reference the tea ceremony, a contemplative practice grounded in the present.

The piece feels nautical, carnivalesque, talismanic, occultish and features a hypnotic fortune teller as indicated by the swirling, vortex-like forms radiating from the center. It’s tall and taps into the ineffable geometry of the soul.

This bold geometric abstract is inspired by Bauhaus costumes. Two “figures” are linked and dancing together, joined by a common gold circle that represents their shared experience of music/life. The minimal palette of yellow ochre, antique gold, black, white, and cream is also in line with the graphic design style promoted by the Bauhaus, the accessibility and simplicity still relevant today. Symbolically, the piece is about our relationships with life, the complexities of the Self, and those we love—both demanding and full of reward.

The Gateway

Organic cascading arches land in color blocks. The palette is soft with sages, terra cottas, mauves, and creams. Gold gates guard each side of the black hole in the middle that opens to the surrounding infinite vastness.

The gateway symbolizes a place of non-action or meditation. Take pause before passing through; embrace the opportunity to observe, understand, bless, and then release your past. By letting go, you reclaim your power.

This painting is inspired by the joining of forces, harmonious relating, and calm after a storm. Strong black and white stripes, a white diamond at the top of the composition. and a red triangle echo tribal symbols. The overall formation of shapes culminates as a protective figure. A light blue wall juts outward in faux 3-D toward the viewer. There's a wash of water and next to it, hypnotic, concentric linework.
