Concentric arched forms in shades of blue against a black background invite contemplation on the role of darkness and difficulty in seeding growth, wisdom and inner awakening - concepts echoed in Buddhist teacher Thich Nhat Hanh's metaphor and book titled "No Mud, No Lotus: The Art of Transforming Suffering."
The deep black void at the center represents the depths of emotions like sadness, grief or depression that we instinctively tend to resist. However, the radiating bands gradually transitioning from inky blue to bright turquoise suggest that by turning inward with compassion toward our own darknessses, we nurture the conditions for the expansion of awareness and spiritual flowering signified by the brightening hues.
The radiating shapes evoke ideas of unfolding petals as well as the rainbow–both of which require darkness in the form of mud and clouds if they are to exist at all–a fitting metaphor for human resilience born of life's difficulties when faced with the generosity of turning toward rather than avoidance.
The archways could further symbolize the opening of doors or gateways to greater self-understanding that can arise from sincerely looking inward during difficult periods of life without judgment or resistance. In this light, our psychological shadows can paradoxically reveal gifts of clarity, wisdom and fresh perspective.
